Because Tanzania is a large country, travel between major attractions can take time. Many visitors reach Serengeti National Park by road or by flight. There are several airstrips inside Serengeti National Park where light aircraft can land. From Kilimanjaro International Airport, the drive to Serengeti National Park takes about seven hours. Flying to Serengeti National Park is much faster and usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on the airstrip you use.

Once inside the park, all visitors must follow the rules and regulations of Serengeti National Park. These rules are in place to protect wildlife, visitors, and the natural environment.

  • Serengeti National Park normally opens at 6 am and closes at 6 pm. Driving inside the park outside these hours is not allowed unless you have special permission. Always plan your game drives within the allowed time.
  • The speed limit inside Serengeti National Park is 50 kilometers per hour. This rule helps reduce accidents because animals can cross the roads at any time. Driving off the marked tracks is not allowed. Special permission is required for off road driving, and fines are issued for breaking this rule.
  • Feeding animals is strictly forbidden. Wildlife must find food naturally. Bringing firearms or explosives into Serengeti National Park is not allowed. Armed rangers are available if protection is needed.
  • Smoking is only allowed in designated areas. Always ask your guide where smoking is permitted. Fires can cause serious damage to wildlife and vegetation.
  • Camping is only allowed in official campsites. Camping outside these areas is dangerous and not permitted. Visitors must stay at least 100 meters away from animals and should not leave the vehicle unless the guide allows it.
  • Wildlife always has the right of way. Do not chase, block, or disturb animals. When animals cross the road, wait patiently and do not hoot. Loud noise such as revving engines is not allowed.
  • Removing plants, animals, or natural items from the park is prohibited without special permission. Research activities require official approval and supervision.
  • Littering is strictly prohibited. Trash can harm or kill wildlife. Pets are not allowed inside Serengeti National Park.
