Explore Grumeti Hills: Serengeti’s Scenic Wildlife Haven

The geology of the Serengeti is so much dependent on the interior of the higher plates of the Serengeti. The raised area of the Serengeti offer very beautiful views of the plains of the area. The highest point around this Serengeti is about 3,636 meters above sea level. The lowest point is at 920 meters above sea level an it’s at the Speke gulf on the Lake Victoria.

Most raised features like the hills in the Serengeti national park are as a result of the volcanic activity on the plates of the area. The most notable highland here is the Ol Doinyo Lengai Mountain. This mountain gets its name from the Masai language and it means the Mountain of God. It’s also the only active volcanic mountain in the area. this shows how much the volcanic forces still have an influence on the geology of the Serengeti National park.

The western sector of the Serengeti national park has a very notable slope. The slope lowers up to about 1,850 meters above sea level on the Ngorongoro Crater side and about 1000 meters above sea level on the side of the Lake Victoria. The rest of the area of the Serengeti is cover with plains with smaller hills to patch up.

The Eastern part of the Serengeti National Park is the location for the Gol Mountains.  It’s also has an influence on the geology of the Serengeti national Park. The Hills of Serengeti are: Kuria Hills, Grumenti hills, Makoma hills, Ikoma hills, and Naabi hills.

Grumeti Hills

Grumeti Hills are the highest in the Serengeti National Park. The hills are about 2 kilometers from the Grumenti River. This river is key to the wildebeest migration. It is crocodile infested everyone is always watching how the wildebeests cross this water and survive the crocodiles. The wildebeests will have to cross twice, as they leave the Serengeti National Park and while returning. The hills are part of the Grumenti wildlife Management Area.
