Grumeti Game Reserve is located next to Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. Grumeti Game Reserve lies directly along this migration path and helps ensure that animals can move safely between the two parks.
The reserve covers about 350,000 acres of land. Since 2002, it has been managed by the Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fund. This organization works to protect wildlife, manage natural resources, and support local communities living around the reserve. Grumeti Game Reserve is home to the Grumeti River, which is one of the most important rivers during the wildebeest migration. All migrating herds must cross this river as part of their journey. The Grumeti River is known for having many crocodiles. These crocodiles stay in the river throughout the year and wait for animals to cross. When the migration reaches the river, large numbers of wildebeests attempt to cross the water.
Millions of animals cross the Grumeti River during the migration season. This usually happens in the dry months from July to September. During this time, water becomes scarce in other areas, forcing animals to move toward permanent rivers like the Grumeti. The river crossings are watched closely by visitors and researchers.
The banks of the Grumeti River are lined with acacia trees and areas of woodland. These provide shade and attract many animals. Apart from crocodiles, other predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas live near the river. They wait for chances to catch prey during crossings.
