The Park derives its name from the Masai people. The word “siringet,” which translated as a place where the land runs on, is where the park gets its name.
The park covers an area of about 14,763 square Kilometers. Making it one of the biggest parks in Tanzania as well. The endless plains as described by the Masai are basically home to the wildebeests that are highly sought after animals during their calving season and migrating season. The park is generally a continuation of the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya. This makes it easy for the wildebeest to move to Kenya in the dry season in search of water and greener grass.
Watching the wildebeest move thousands of Kilometers as they make their way from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara is such a spectacular experience. Everyone should have a chance to witness. The gazelles and Zebras are another group of animals that are work watching. They move together with the millions of wildebeest to cross from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara .
The Calving Season of the Migration.
When one thinks about the Wildebeests great migration, pictures of large herds of wildebeest’s crossing over fields and Grumenti river will come to mind. There is a smaller migration that occurs prior to this great migration. Very many people overlook this season and yet it’s very important and contributes a great deal to the bigger migration.
What is the calving season?
This is a process by which by which the Wildebeests move to the southern areas of the Serengeti National Park to spread out in the plains filled with lush vegetation to give birth. This period is usually in the Months of January to March. The routs they use to the plains are the same but the times sometimes vary but they usually prefer the rainy season. The wildebeest do not go through this process alone, the Gazelle and Zebras also follow through. They go to these areas since they have short grass that can easily be eaten by their young one and it’s also hard for predators to hide here.
