Southern Sector of Serengeti National Park

The Southern Sector of Serengeti National Park

The Southern Sector of Serengeti National Park is located in the southern part of this famous park. It stretches from the lower edge of the Central Serengeti down to the border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This makes the Southern Sector one of the easiest areas to reach after the Central region, especially for travelers entering from Ngorongoro.

The Southern Sector is made up of many natural features. These include small rivers, woodland areas, scattered acacia trees, gentle hills, granite kopjes, and wide open grasslands. This mix of habitats supports many animals and makes the area important for wildlife throughout the year, especially during certain seasons.

Because of these habitats, the Southern Sector is home to many animals. Common wildlife includes wildebeests, zebras, lions, buffaloes, leopards, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, gazelles, and many bird species. Game drives in this part of Serengeti National Park offer good chances to see animals moving freely across the plains.

Best time to visit the Southern Sector of Serengeti

Best time to visit the Southern Sector of Serengeti

The best time to visit the Southern Sector is between December and May. During this time, the migrating herds return from other parts of the Serengeti ecosystem and settle in the south. This period leads into the calving season, which usually takes place in January and February. During calving season, thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a short time. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards closely follow the herds, making wildlife viewing very active.

This sector is one of the best places to see the early stages of the Great Migration. As the rains end and grass begins to dry, animals slowly start moving north.
