The Northern Sector of Serengeti is situated between the heart of Serengeti (Central region) and the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve of neighboring Kenya.
Though rarely visited because of its remoteness, the Northern sector (Lobo area) prides in the greatest concentration of herds of African Elephants in the Serengeti area, accompanied by good numbers of predators namely the lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards.
Hippos, giraffes, topi, buffalos, hartebeest and elands are resident animals in the North.
In comparison to the other sectors in Serengeti, especially the Southern sector, the Northern sector is unspoiled with beautiful landscapes of rolling green hills, open Savannahs dotted with acacia woodlands and kopjes.
Best time to visit
In June-July for a chance to witness the great river crossing of the migrants of the croc-infested Mara River during the annual Wildebeest migration. This action-packed heart throbbing moment is not worth missing. Though timing its occurrence is a game of some luck and chance.
In September and October to large herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and antelopes on the Great Migration as they pass through the area on their way back to the Southern Plains of Serengeti.
You can also visit this part of the park during other months in the year too. As mentioned earlier, the Northern sector is home to the largest elephant herds in Serengeti and big lion prides among other predators that you are sure to see during a game drive plus the serval.
